The 30th anniversary PlayStation 5 Pro collection has sold out in seconds, despite its high price point.

The PS5 Pro was announced earlier this month with Sony promising fans a number of improvements that would make their gaming experience look better, with upgraded GPU, advanced ray tracing and AI-driven upscaling. It is, according to Sony, “the most visually impressive way to play games on PlayStation” and will be launched November 7

However, a number of fans complained about the £700 price tag – with players needing to buy a separate disc drive if they wanted to play physical games. A digital-only PS5 is currently available for less than £400.

Sony also announced a throwback version of the PS5 Pro to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the original PlayStation. The limited-edition collection gives the modern console a nostalgic reworking with a vintage grey shell and matching DualSense controller alongside various, themed accessories. The price wasn’t confirmed ahead of time, but pre-orders for the collection went live yesterday (September 26) with the PS5 Pro version of the collection costing fans £960.

Despite limiting consoles to one-per-customer, the 30th Anniversary edition of the PS5 Pro sold out in seconds. However, a number of the consoles have appeared on resale sites. One eBay listing has the console priced at £4800 while another is charging £3800, despite the console not shipping until November. Only 12,300 versions of the PS5 Pro 30th Anniversary Edition were available.

Speaking to IGN, an eBay representative explained that “presale listings are allowed on eBay if they comply with our presale policy. eBay’s price gouging policy only applies to essential items, and does not include items such as video game consoles.”

Defending the price of the PS5 Pro, PlayStation senior principal project manager Toshi Aoki explained that “it’s more of a full package that will give that exceptional value to the players” and Sony is only targeting “the most engaged players” with the console. Pre-orders for the PS5 Pro also went live yesterday, with players still able to get their hands on one.
