The recently released reboot of Malcolm In The Middle has been warmly embraced by fans, who have compared it favourably to the recent revival of Scrubs.
The original series starred Frankie Muniz as Malcolm, the intelligent middle child of a chaotic family dealing with the issues of everyday life. It ran from 2000-2006 and made Bryan Cranston a household name prior to his success with Breaking Bad, playing eccentric father Hal.
Two decades on from its end, the show has been revived as a four-episode miniseries titled Malcolm In The Middle: Life’s Still Unfair. Muniz returns as Malcolm, now a father desperately avoiding his family until he is forced back into the mix with an invitation to his parents’ 40th wedding anniversary.
All main cast members returned for the series with the exception of Erik Per Sullivan, who played Dewey in the original show, and declined to return after retiring from acting. Caleb Ellsworth-Clark took over the role.
Fans took to X (formerly Twitter) to share their reactions to the show, which have mostly been positive. “The Malcolm in the Middle reunion has me in tears,” wrote one viewer, while others aligned it with the new series of fellow 2000s sitcom Scrubs.

“The Scrubs reboot is one of the best shows on television right now. It’s incredible,” said one fan. “So I was surprised when I watched the first episode of Malcolm In The Middle. Life is still unfair and it was equally good. Sitcoms are back and I’m so happy about it.”

Another added: “I watched Malcolm In The Middle almost everyday for my way too long two-and-a-half week stay in the hospital back in 2005 and I just started the revival of it on Hulu now and been smiling or laughing the entire time. What a comfort. So happy with the revivals out like Malcolm and Scrubs.”

Not everyone was a fan, with one user posting: “Watched the new Malcolm in the Middle mini series and well its OK but was kinda cringe ngl. OG series is incredible but this new thing felt unnecessary and like they were trying too hard to be the exact same way they were 20+ years ago and they’re all just too old for that.”
