Here are the first five minutes of Euphoria’s third – and possibly last – season

HBO has teased the new season of Euphoria by dropping the first five minutes of its opening episode.

Returning to screens for the first time since 2022, the cast of the hit show are no longer in high school and traverse the various issues of adult life, including Rue (Zendaya) getting in trouble with the law. The season is set to premiere on Sunday April 12 on HBO Max (plus Sky Atlantic and NOW in the UK), but will have a special screening on the same day at Coachella.

“A lot of people ask what I’ve been up to since high school,” Rue says in voiceover. “Honestly, nothing good.”

Striking quite a different tone to the show’s previous seasons, she is seen cruising through Mexico’s Chihuahuan Desert, paying a motorcyclist to set up a makeshift platform so she can drive across the US border.

The car then gets stuck at the top. Rue tries to reverse and shift its weight, but when this fails, she abandons the car and starts walking.

The extreme tonal shift depicted in a trailer for the show lead some to compare it to the computer game Grand Theft Auto. Elsewhere, we see Cassie (Sydney Sweeney) enters the world of adult “cam girl” content after reuniting with Maddy (Alexa Demie).

Zendaya has also hinted during an interview that this season may be the last, which has been heavily rumoured for some time.

Speaking about her experience on the show in general, she said she was “proud” of what she achieved and that the series. “Rue taught me so much about life,” she explained. “That crew has also seen me grow up. I owe so much to that show. Rue taught me so much about empathy and redemption. I’m very grateful for all of it.”

In other news, the show’s lead composer Labrinth recently lashed out at the show and the wider industry, declaring he is “done” with it all.

“I’M DONE WITH THIS INDUSTRY,” wrote Labrinth (real name Timothy Lee McKenzie) in the post. “FUCK COLUMBIA. DOUBLE FUCK EUPHORIA. I’M OUT. THANK YOU AND GOOD NIGHT X.”
