Strauss Zelnick, boss of Grand Theft Auto 6 publishers Take Two, has seemingly confirmed how much the highly-anticipated game will cost – and it’s not as pricey as some fans have been expecting.

Grand Theft Auto 6 is expected to be the most expensive video game ever made. Last month it was reported Rockstar Games have spent more than £2.7billion while developing the follow-up to 2013’s Grand Theft Auto 5. One former developer claimed he spent 39 months making broken glass look more realistic in the game and last year, a report said Rockstar had spent between $200million and $300million to create hyper-realistic water in Grand Theft Auto 6 with a team of 20 working on the project.
Because of this, many fans are expecting Grand Theft Auto 6 to cost at least $100 when it launches in November. Last year, the design director of Saints Row said GTA 6 “deserves” to be sold for $100 and a gaming analyst said the title could “re-establish packed video game prices after decades of deflation despite rampant cost growth”.
In an interview with The Game Business, Strauss Zelnick was asked about Take Two’s plans for bringing adverts into games. “For free-to-play titles, yes. For titles you’ve paid $70 or $80 for, no,” he replied. He was then asked about a Netflix-style system that would display adverts while a game is paused. “It’s very difficult for me to believe we’d want interstitial advertising in a game someone has paid $70 or $80 for,” he said.
Because of his repeated use of the standard “$70 or $80” price tag many fans are speculating that Take Two won’t be charging more than usual for Grand Theft Auto 6, which is the studio’s next big release.
Speaking to Variety last year, Zelnick said: “Our goal always is to deliver more value than what we charge. We’re highly focused on making sure that the experience is great, not just because the game itself is great, but also because consumers have paid a fair price for it.”
He previously teased games could be charged at a per-hour price, depending how big they are. Following backlash, Take Two released a statement saying “Strauss was outlining the overall, general pricing convention for entertainment, in no way did he suggest the need for a new pricing method for core games – and certainly not hourly rates.”
However Nintendo has implemented a variable pricing strategy for Switch 2 games that’s based on development length, replayability and other factors.
In other news, the latest blockbuster Fortnite collaboration has been revealed, with Toy Story heading to the hit battle royale game.
