One of the stars of the recent Malcolm In The Middle revival has revealed that the actor who played Dewey, Erik Per Sullivan, turned down “buckets of money” to come back.
The actor played the role of Dewey, the youngest member of the sitcom family, for the entirety of the show’s run from 2000-2006. However, he declined to return for the recent revival, Malcolm In The Middle: Life’s Still Unfair, with actor Caleb Ellsworth-Clark taking over the role.
In a recent interview with The Guardian, star Jane Kaczmarek (who plays their mother, Lois) said Per Sullivan is “studying Dickens and is an incredible student. They offered him buckets of money to come back, and he just said, ‘No thank you.’”
In 2024, the actress also revealed that “he goes to school at a very prestigious American university that he’s asked us all to be quiet about”, and that “I admire it because so many people think being in show business is the greatest thing in the world, it’s not for everyone.”
Per Sullivan would also appear in the films The Cider House Rules, Christmas With The Kranks, and Finding Nemo, before moving away from acting in 2010.
Malcolm In The Middle: Life’s Still Unfair debuts on Disney+ in the UK on Friday April 10. Title character Malcolm (Frankie Muniz) is now a father and has distanced himself from his family, something that he has to address when he is invited to his parents’ 40th wedding anniversary. Kaczmarek and Bryan Cranston return as Malcolm’s parents, while Christopher Masterson and Justin Berland also reprise their roles as his chaotic brothers.
Last year Muniz said shooting the Malcolm In The Middle reboot had been “the best time of my entire life”. Recently, the creators of the show teased the possibility of a spin-off series about Malcolm’s daughter, played by newcomer Keeley Karston.
