The sequel to 2023’s wildly successful The Super Mario Bros. Movie, the film follows Mario, Luigi and friends as they venture through space to rescue Princess Rosalina from the evil Bowser Jr, who intends to conquer the galaxy.

Based on the Nintendo gaming franchise, it has been directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, who also oversaw the previous film, as well as 2018’s Teen Titans Go! To The Movies.

Chris PrattAnya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Day, Jack Black and Keegan-Michael Key reprise their roles from the last film, with Benny Safdie, Donald Glover, Glen Powell and Brie Larson joining the cast.

The early reviews for the new film have been divided, with some praising it for its rich fan service and its “visually striking visuals and action set pieces”, while others have blasted it as a “unpretentiously vapid cocktail of big-budget technical mastery and lack of artistic ambition”.

The film’s original score, composed by Brian Tyler, is also being released on physical media, with a 2LP set featuring 24 tracks from the film, as well as cassette and CD versions. Order your copy here

Earlier this month, a ratings description of the movie suggested The Super Mario Galaxy Movie will answer a long-standing Nintendo mystery about the relationship between Princess Peach and Rosalina.

It’s also been reported that Fox McCloud’s appearance in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie comes ahead of a brand new Star Fox game coming to the Nintendo Switch 2 later this year.

Does The Super Mario Galaxy Movie have a post-credits scene?

Yes, the film does indeed have a post-credits scene – in fact, in keeping with the formula made familiar by the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it actually has two.

In the light-hearted mid-credits scene, the film calls back to the 2023 original by showing Lumalee – a character imprisoned by Bowser – as he now assumes control and turns the table on Bowser and Bowser Junior. We see him taunting the villains and holding them captive, while still quipping away with his trademark dark jokes.

For the real die-hards, the second tease comes at the very end of the credits and it points to the possible next chapter in the franchise.

The scene introduces Daisy, the princess character first seen in the 1989 Game Boy game Super Mario Land. She saves somebody from being mugged by a monkey in the scene, signalling that she could be a major new protagonist in the inevitable third film. For now, little is known about the next instalment, but fans can expect Daisy to be a big part of it.
