HBO and HBO Max chief Casey Bloys has revealed that the forthcoming Harry Potter television series will not have a new season every year.

The new show, which is the latest adaptation of the J.K. Rowling book series phenomenon and subsequent blockbuster film run, is set to premiere on HBO in 2027 and run for 10 seasons.
Already, John Lithgow has been confirmed as playing Professor Dumbledore, and others in the cast include Nick Frost as Hagrid, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, and Paul Whitehouse as caretaker Argus Filch.
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, the HBO boss spoke about the difficulty of making a show of that scale, and subtly revealed that there will not be a new season of Harry Potter released each year as a result.
Sharing how some shows are easier to shoot than others, Bloys revealed series like The Pitt have a faster rate of completion than those reliant on special effects, and because of that, some of the more “world-building” series take longer to reach TV screens.
“You have to balance it. For some of the bigger shows like Harry Potter or House of the Dragon, or The Last of Us, huge world-building shows, it would be nice to have those on an annual basis. But from a production point of view, it’s just not possible,” he said.
“It’s not that everybody involved is just taking their time and sitting around. These shows are complicated to do,” Bloys added. “In order to bring a show back on an annual basis, you do have to start from the beginning with people who know how to do it […] and it’s helpful if there are no dragons that need to be rendered, or zombies and things like that.”

Since it was announced, the Harry Potter series has faced backlash due to author J.K. Rowling’s anti-trans views and public hostility toward the transgender community.
After sharing that he was “very happy with what I’m seeing” of the new HBO show, Bloys addressed the controversy surrounding the series – both due to Rowling, and following Essiedu saying that he has received racist death threats after being cast.
“The good news-bad news with big IP worlds is you have a lot of passionate fans, huge passionate fan bases. That also comes with people having very specific opinions, people who feel like they’re fierce protectors,” he said. “So anytime we do a show like that, not just Harry Potter, but any kind of big IP show, we will always talk to anybody participating about social media and best practices and things like that. It is just a reality.”
Others involved in the series have spoken about backlash as a result of Rowling’s views, and Lithgow recently revealed that he considered quitting the TV show over the controversy.

Essiedu has shared opposition to Rowling’s views too, and was among a community of over 400 who signed a petition calling for the UK entertainment industry to protect trans rights, while Nick Frost spoke out against the author’s comments after being cast as Hagrid.
Last year, Daniel Radcliffe, who played Harry Potter in the films, also reflected on her controversial views in an interview with The Atlantic and said that “it makes me really sad, ultimately”.
In 2020, he wrote an essay in support of the trans community too, referencing Rowling. “Transgender women are women. Any statement to the contrary erases the identity and dignity of transgender people and goes against all advice given by professional health care associations who have far more expertise on this subject matter than either Jo or I,” he wrote at the time.
Also in light of the new series, Katie Leung, who played Cho Chang in the original Harry Potter films, said she would “not want to go back” to her time playing the character, and Cillian Murphy confirmed his lack of interest in playing Lord Voldemort in the show, saying he wasn’t even aware he was linked to the part.
