Primal Scream’s Bobby Gillespie has teamed up with Yttling Jazz on the “magical” new single ‘Strange’ – listen below.
Yttling Jazz is the current solo project of Björn Yttling, also known as being one third of the Swedish indie pop group Peter Björn and John. He is also an accomplished producer, having worked with the likes of Lykke Li, Franz Ferdinand and Chrissie Hynde.
In addition, he has also worked as a producer for Primal Scream – on 2008’s ‘Beautiful Future’ and 2016’s ‘Chaosmosis’ – and now the two parties have come together again for ‘Strange’.
The new song comes from a new deluxe edition of Yttling Jazz’s 2024 album ‘Illegal Hit’, a 3CD package made up of the original album, new songs and instrumentals, remakes and collaborative reinterpretations of songs.
‘Strange’ is a new track, boasting a haunting, cinematic arrangement reminiscent of Ennio Morricone’s spaghetti Western scores. Check out the video here:
Yttling has said: “I called Bobby and presented the idea to have him sing on a Yttling Jazz track. Sent him some music and within ten minutes he sent back a beautiful demo of ‘Strange.’ Fantastic lyrics and a really cool vibe on this track. The harmonica, vibraphone and Bobby’s voice work so well together!”
Gillespie added: “It was so great to work with Björn Yttling once again. He sent me over some fabulous music by his jazz ensemble and I just happened to have a lyric that fitted perfectly with the mood of the track. I really love the end result. A magical pairing.”
Also included on the expanded edition of ‘Illegal Hit’ are Yukimi of Little Dragon, The Tallest Man On Earth, El Perro Del Mar and Matt Sweeney.
As for Primal Scream, they recently shared their reaction to ‘Movin’ On Up’ being covered by Geese in Glasgow.
In January, they praised Simone Marie Butler’s “positive energy” and “committed musicianship” following her departure from the band after 13 years. “Her warmth of character, kindness and gentleness lit up proceedings wherever we found ourselves in the world. We have a lot of great memories and she will forever be part of the Scream family. We wish her the best of luck and good fortune in her future adventures,” the band said.
Their 1997 remix album ‘Echo Dek’ will also be one of the records being made available for Record Store Day 2025 in support of War Child.
