Kirsten Dunst has joined the cast of A Minecraft Movie sequel as Alex after joking about wanting to make a movie that doesn’t lose her money.

A Minecraft Movie was released in 2025 and became the highest grossing movie of the year thanks to a number of viral moments. An untitled sequel was announced shortly afterwards.
Jason Momoa (Garrett ‘The Garbage Man’ Garrison), Jack Black (Steve), Danielle Brooks (Dawn), Matt Berry (Villager) and Jennifer Coolidge (Marlene) are all set to reprise their roles from the original though Emma Meyers (Natalie) involvement has yet to be confirmed. Jared Hess is also returning to direct the sequel from a script written with Chris Galletta
Yesterday (March 19) it was announced (via Deadline) that Kirsten Dunst would be joining the cast of A Minecraft Movie sequel as Alex, one of the main playable characters from the hit video game who was teased in the first movie’s post-credit scene.
Last year, she told Town & Country magazine that she’d love to star in A Minecraft Movie sequel because her kids loved the original. She’d also like to make “a pile of cash” after focusing on indie films for the past few years. “Maybe I can just make a movie where I don’t lose money?”

A Minecraft Movie sequel is set to hit cinemas July 23, 2027.
Not much is known about the plot of the highly-anticipated sequel but according to Momoa, the script is “even better” than the original. “It’s so good, I was laughing out loud. I haven’t laughed out loud in a very long time at a script. I was perplexed on the first script, this one I’m laughing out loud,” he said while appearing on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. Momoa also said filming would begin at the end of April.
