Anya Taylor-Joy found herself caught in the middle of an awkward exchange during an interview on The Today Show in the US.

The star was on the Wednesday (March 18) edition of the daytime show promoting the forthcoming release of The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, released in UK cinemas on April 1.
While there, host Craig Melvin mentioned that the Queen’s Gambit star is also linked to a biopic of Joni Mitchell. He then strangely asked Taylor-Joy to compare the artist with Princess Peach, the character she voices in the Super Mario films.

“You’re rumoured to be playing Joni Mitchell, speaking of through lines,” Melvin said. “One of the, arguably, most singularly important women in music over the last generation or so. Princess Peach, one of the most iconic women in gaming history. What’s the connection there?”
Taylor-Joy pauses before repeating his question for clarity, before answering: “They’re both singular; you can’t touch them. They’re in a league of their own.”
The exchange has since been shared online, with X (formerly Twitter) users mocking the unusual nature of the question. “In [her] defence, this is a question that has never been asked to anyone before” wrote one, with another adding: “I hope, as a follow-up, he asked about the connection between Bowser and Graham Nash.”

Alongside previous stars Chris Pratt, Charlie Day, and Jack Black, Taylor-Joy will be joined in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie by new addition Brie Larson. Recently, Donald Glover was announced as the voice of Yoshi, the Mario Bros’ dinosaur ally.
While Anya Taylor-Joy is not yet confirmed to be playing Joni Mitchell, last month Meryl Streep was announced as playing the legend in her later years by record executive Clive Davis.
