The second season of The Pitt has audiences gripped, but can fans expect a third season? Find out below.
Season one of the HBO Max medical drama premiered in January last year and followed Noah Wyle’s Dr. Michael ‘Robby’ Robinavitch and his emergency room team at Pittsburgh’s Mercy Hospital as they navigated a hectic 15-hour shift in real time, tackling overdoses, heart attacks and personal struggles amid a strained healthcare system.
The second season launched this January, with subsequent episodes arriving weekly until the finale on April 16. While it is streaming on HBO Max in the US, it remains unavailable to watch legally in the UK, although both seasons will debut when the UK incarnation of HBO Max launches on March 26.

The show has been created by John Wells and R. Scott Gemmill of ER fame, and has been widely praised by critics for its relentless pacing and authenticity. Season two sits on a 99 per cent rating on reviews aggregator Rotten Tomatoes.
The first season won the Golden Globe for Best Television Drama Series and Best Actor for Wyle. It was also a big winner at the Emmys last year, picking up Outstanding Drama Series, as well as acting prizes for Wyle and Katherine LaNasa.
It was also named as one of NME’s best shows of 2025, noting: “Grisly emergencies, unruly patients, fresh interns, grief, PTSD and an uncomfortably realistic portrayal of all-too-familiar tragedies all came together to form one of the most intense and bingeable series in recent memory.”
Is The Pitt getting a season three?
The show continues to be a big hit for HBO Max, so it came as no surprise that they officially renewed it for a third season before season two even premiered.
The announcement was made by HBO CEO Casey Bloys at an event in Los Angeles on January 7, one day before the opening episode of season two aired.
“It’s hard to make any good show, regardless of whether it’s comedy, drama or documentary. But what John and Noah and Scott wanted to do going in was to do a high-quality show, but also one that was set up in a way that you could do 15 episodes. So, the concept of the show being on essentially one set made the budget manageable,” Bloys told Variety last year.
“And you have a group of people who understand how to make 15 episodes, but also how to bring it back on an annual basis. That is the one thing I think that we’ve gotten away from in television, that ability to bring shows back on an annual basis.”
There has been no premiere date announced for season three, but previous seasons have launched in early January 2025 and 2026 respectively, so the goal may be to kick off the third season early in 2027.
