The show has been created by Bill Lawrence, best known for Ted Lasso and Scrubs, alongside Matt Tarses, who also wrote on Scrubs.
Carell plays Greg Russo, a successful novelist, whose daughter Katie (Charly Clive) hits a personal crisis while teaching at a college. Greg shows up to help her, eventually becoming a writer-in-residence on the same campus.
The show will run for 10 episodes on HBO in the US and on Sky and NOW TV in the UK. The first episode dropped on March 8, with the remaining episodes set to arrive weekly.

The show so far has been praised by critics, with an 88 per cent score on reviews aggregator Rotten Tomatoes and a consensus that reads: “Rooster nestles in with humour and heart thanks to Steve Carell’s soothing performance and Danielle Deadwyler’s exuberant support, leading Bill Lawrence’s kind-spirited, good-time new series to lovely heights.”
Every song on the Rooster soundtrack
The show features a theme song from former R.E.M. frontman Michael Stipe, who has joined forces with Andrew Watt, Josh Klinghoffer and Travis Barker for the song ‘I Played The Fool’. It is the first new song from Stipe in three years.
“I’m thrilled to lend my voice to Rooster – as a giant fan of everyone involved, it’s a real honour to be included with ‘I Played The Fool’,” the singer has said.
Rooster co-creator Tarses added: “When Andrew Watt told us he thought he could get Michael Stipe to write and record a new song for us, we said, ‘Cool, good luck with that’. We knew this would never happen. But a few months later, Andrew sent an early demo of ‘I Played the Fool’. And when I listened to it on my phone, I cried. I really did. Saying we are excited to have this great song and this iconic voice on our main title is a huge understatement.”
In addition, the following songs have featured in the show so far:
EPISODE ONE
New Order – ‘Age Of Consent’
Fun Boy Three – ‘Our Lips Are Sealed’
Soft Focus – ‘Firing Line’
Yaz – ‘Only You’
John Moran – ‘Make It With Me’
Wayne Murray – ‘Baby You Are A Star’
Violent Femmes – ‘Kiss Off’
