Whoopi Goldberg joins Timothée Chalamet pile-on over opera and ballet comments: “Be careful”

Whoopi Goldberg had warned Timothée Chalamet that his dismissive remarks about ballet and opera may harm his career.

The star is currently on the campaign trail with the Oscar nominated Marty Supreme, but sparked controversy during a Q&A with fellow actor Matthew McConaughey recently. Discussing the preservation of the theatrical cinema experience, he quipped: “I don’t want to be working in ballet, or opera, or things where it’s like, ‘Hey, keep this thing alive, even though like no one cares about this anymore.’ All respect to all the ballet and opera people out there.”

Chalamet then joked that those comments might be taken badly, saying: “I just lost 14 cents in viewership. I just took shots for no reason.” Many figures within the ballet and opera world have criticised him for his comments, and now the Oscar-winning Sister Act star has made her feelings known.

Speaking as a host on long-running talk show The View, Goldberg made reference to the fact that the actor’s grandmother, mother, and sister were all previously members of the New York City ballet. “You come from a dance family – and so, when you crap on somebody else’s art form, it doesn’t feel good” she said. “It doesn’t feel good to see, and you probably didn’t realise that until you said, ‘Oh, I’m in trouble.’”

Talking about his quip that he lost “14 cents in viewership”, she said: “When people get mad, it’ll be a lot more than 14 cents – so be careful. I’m just saying, be careful, boy.” Clarifying her remarks, she added: “He is a boy to me – no disrespect”, mocking the half-apology the actor gave after his remarks. “You can’t say, ‘Oh, this is dumb, no disrespect.’ That’s absolute disrespect.”

Last month, Whoopi Goldberg condemned US President Donald Trump for posting racist cartoons of his predecessor Barack Obama and his wife Michelle.
