Arriving in cinemas on April 17, Mother Mary sees Hathaway play a pop star who abruptly ends her tour after an emotional crisis before reconnecting with an estranged friend and fashion designer (Michaela Coel) to prepare for a comeback performance.

Written and directed by David Lowery (The Green Knight), the trailer arrived in December, and now the first song has been shared from the soundtrack.

Titled ‘Burial’, the synth-driven track was written by Charli XCX and is performed by Hathaway. “I’ll kill you softly/ So sweetly, kindly/I’m mesmerising, it’s terrifying,” she sings in the ethereal, atmospheric verse, before building towards the energetic, slightly unsettling pre-chorus: “This black suit fits like a glove/ I was born to be the widow of love/Won’t lose myself to a touch.”

The song also features production from Bleachers’ frontman Jack Antonoff and from The 1975’s George Daniel – who tied the knot with Charli last year.

This isn’t the first time that Hathaway has gotten involved in the soundtracks to her films, having also taken on singing roles in both the 2012 film adaptation of Les Misérables, and in 2011’s animated film, Rio.

For Charli, the contribution to the Mother Mary soundtrack follows on from her providing the score for the recent Wuthering Heights film starring Jacob Elordi and Margot Robbie, and also releasing a companion album that was given a four-star review from NME and praised as “delicious gothic pop”.

The ‘365’ singer has also turned her sights more towards acting since sharing the huge ‘BRAT’ album in 2024 – starring in her own mockumentary The Moment, taking on a role in new romance Erupcja, and having a supporting role in fantasy, 100 Nights Of Hero.

She also played a comedic version of herself in the TV show Overcompensating, and was recently cast alongside Supergirl star Milly Alcock in a new horror film directed by Takasi Miike.

As well as Mother Mary, Hathaway is also set to appear on screen again later this spring, when she rejoins Meryl Streep and Emily Blunt for the sequel of The Devil Wears Prada.

The film arrives 20 years after the 2006 comedy was released, and Lady Gaga will also be joining the cast, having previously taken on roles in the 2018 remake of A Star Is Born, the Joker sequel, Folie à Deux, and much more.
