The team behind Marvel’s Wolverine has confirmed the release date for the long-awaited superhero game – and it’s coming sooner than many fans were expecting.

Marvel’s Wolverine was originally announced back in 2021 from the same team who made Marvel’s Spider-Man and its 2023 sequel. “Our goal here is to not only respect the DNA of what makes the character so popular, but also look for opportunities to make it feel fresh and truly reflect the Insomniac spirit,” said a blog post from Insomniac Games.

There had been speculation that Marvel’s Wolverine would launch in 2023 but nothing materialised. At the end of last year though, Insomniac confirmed the game would be released at some point this year.

It’s now been announced that Marvel’s Wolverine will launch for PlayStation 5 on September 15 2026.

The game will see Wolverine slashing his way through Japan, Madripoor, and North America whilst comic book favourites Omega Red and Mystique are also set to appear. “Become a living weapon. As he searches for answers about his past, Wolverine will do whatever it takes – unleashing brutal claw combat, violent rage, and relentless determination – to cut through the mystery of the man he used to be,” reads an official description of the game.

Insomniac said they’re trying to deliver “the ultimate Wolverine fantasy” but warned the story is “much darker and more brutal than you might expect” from the studio.

“Bold, resilient, and volatile, Wolverine is a character that all of us at Insomniac are thrilled to explore in collaboration with our friends at Marvel Games and Sony Interactive Entertainment,” reads a blog entry about the game. “Like our Marvel’s Spider-Man franchise, we’re once again combining our super powers to deliver an original take on a beloved character based on Marvel Comics.”

Marvel’s Wolverine will see Australian actor Liam McIntyre take over the role made famous by Hugh Jackman.

Some fans are speculating that Marvel’s Wolverine is being released in September to try and avoid a clash with Grand Theft Auto 6, which is set to launch November. Earlier this month, publishers Take-Two confirmed Grand Theft Auto 6 was still on track to launch November 19 while marketing will begin in the summer.

In other news, story details about Resident Evil Requiem have been shared online ahead and the game’s developers aren’t happy. “It’s a detestable act that destroys everyone’s happiness and deserves a thousand deaths. May you be cursed to never play games again,” added Resident Evil 2 director Hideki Kamiya.
