In November, the BBC confirmed that the beloved detective drama series would be returning to screens in 2027, with creator Jed Mercurio back, as well as lead stars Martin Compston, Vicky McClure and Adrian Dunbar.
Now, it has been announced that Carlyle – also known for The Full Monty and 28 Weeks Later – will be the guest lead star of the seventh season. Each season has had a high-profile actor come in to play a central role, with previous names including Kelly MacDonald, Thandiwe Newton, Stephen Graham, Daniel Mays and Keeley Hawes.
Carlyle will play Detective Constable Shaun Massie, a Specialist Rifle Officer who is operating with the Tactical Operations Unit as he works to take down organised crime groups. When his commanding officer is accused of being a sexual predator, Massie’s detached demeanour changes dramatically.
Filming on the episodes begins in Belfast this spring, and Carlyle has said: “Having been a huge admirer of Jed Mercurio’s work for many years, I’m delighted to be given the opportunity to join such an exceptional cast for series seven of Line of Duty. The scripts for the series are excellent and will absolutely maintain the quality that the audience have come to expect from this fantastic show. DC Massie is an extraordinary character and I look forward to bringing him to life.”
Mercurio added: “On Line of Duty we’ve been honoured by the glittering guest leads who’ve joined the cast over the years. We couldn’t be more thrilled that Robert Carlyle will star in series seven as Specialist Rifle Officer Shaun Massie. I’ve been a huge fan of Robert’s work for many years and it will be a career highlight to work with him. Robert always brings mesmerising power and depth to every role; I know viewers will be on the edge of their seats wondering what his character will do next, and why.”
Line Of Duty appeared to wrap up after its sixth season in 2021, with many fans left disappointed when it was revealed that bumbling DSI Ian Buckells turned out to be the crooked cop known as H. Season seven will catch up with the characters after AC-12 has been disbanded and renamed the Inspectorate of Police Standards.
