Actor Peter Greene, who died on December 12 aged 60, was found to have died from accidentally shooting himself in the left armpit, a medical examiner has found.
The actor was known for films such as Pulp Fiction, The Mask, and Training Day, enjoying a long career usually playing villainous roles. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in New York City confirmed to Deadline that Greene’s cause of death was a gunshot wound “of left axilla [armpit] with injury of brachial artery.”
The wound was said to have caused excessive bleeding which led to his passing, with the death ruled as accidental. His body was discovered following a wellness check by police after Greene’s neighbour called his landlord with concerns. While the actor had been open about his struggles with addiction, the outlet said the actor was believed to have been sober for a couple of years at the time of his passing.
The actor played Zed, a corrupt cop who captures Bruce Willis’ character in Quentin Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction, as well as the lead villain, Dorian Tyrell, opposite Jim Carrey in The Mask. Most recently, he had played the character of Uncle Charlie in TV series The Continental, a prequel to the John Wick film series starring Mel Gibson and Colin Woodell. In the 2010s, he had been a series regular on the police drama Chicago P.D., playing criminal antagonist Rory Jensen.
Following his death in December, his manager Gregg Edwards told People: “Nobody played a bad guy better than Peter. But he also had, you know, a gentle side that most people never saw, and a heart as big as gold.” Film critic Richard Roeper paid tribute, writing on X (formerly Twitter): “RIP Peter Greene, who could create indelible characters in just a single scene or two. Electric talent.”
Peter Greene is survived by his brother and sister, as well as his son, Ryder.
