Back in 2024, it was confirmed a fourth Sonic The Hedgehog movie would be heading to cinemas in March 2027. Sonic actor Ben Schwartz was confirmed to return but fans are still waiting to hear if Keanu Reeves’ Shadow, Jim Carrey’s Dr. Robotnik or Idris Elba’s Knuckles will be involved in the new film.
However, following a Sonic The Hedgehog 3 post-credit scene that saw Sonic rescued by Amy The Hedgehog, Kristen Bell has now been announced as the voice of the pink hedgehog.
Amy Rose first appeared in the ‘90s Sonic The Hedgehog manga series and made her video debut in 1993’s Sonic The Hedgehog CD as a non-playable character that needs rescuing from an army of Metal Sonics. Since then, the fan-favourite character has been a regular in Sonic The Hedgehog games – often wielding a giant hammer and trying to win the affections of Sonic.
Sharing the news on Instagram, Schwartz wrote: “WE HAVE OUR AMY ROSE!!! And I could not be more excited!!! Please welcome the incredible Kristen Bell to the Sonic family!!!”
Sonic The Hedgehog 3 took inspiration from 2001’s Sonic Adventure 2 and 2005’s Shadow The Hedgehog, while the upcoming Sonic The Hedgehog 4 is rumoured to take inspiration from Sonic The Hedgehog CD, which saw both Metal Sonic and Amy Rose make their video game debut.
“With the movies, what we always try to do is honor the characters and stories that made them so iconic, but also give it a movie coat of paint. So now that’s the challenge with Amy and Metal,” franchise director Jeff Fowler said in an interview with Polygon. “[However, based on] Amy’s original introduction, we have some different story needs — [we can’t just rely on] Sonic CD.”
“We never put these characters in lightly – it’s always because we think they’re going to bring something interesting and new to the story,” he added. “That really is the overall goal: to make each of these films unique. We never want to repeat ourselves. We never want to feel like we’re making the same movie. It’s always got to take us into new territory tonally, and offer up something new, and give people a reason that they have to get out and see it. Because you don’t want it to feel familiar or expected or, worst of all, predictable.”
Sonic The Hedgehog 4 is set to launch March 19, 2027. Later this year, Sonic rock band Crush 40 are set to hit the road in celebration of the franchise’s 35th anniversary.
In other news, a Call Of Duty: Black Ops 7 advert starring Peter Stormare and Nikki Glaser has been banned in the UK for “trivialising sexual violence”.
