Chappell Roan has a reputation for being a big video game fan. She’s encouraged fans filming her live set on a Nintendo DS and publicly asked for her own Fortnite skin. “If I want to have a really good night, I’ll just eat an edible and play video games,” she told the BBC after being crowned the Sound Of 2025 winner.
In a new interview with Nylon, Roan has revealed that she’s also a fan of the RuneScape soundtrack. In conversation with Hemlocke Springs about her new album ‘The Apple Tree Under The Sea’, Roan said: “Your album makes me feel like I’m listening… I don’t know if you ever played RuneScape? It’s from the early 2000s and has video game sounds down,” she continued. “It’s really medieval synth shit. I’m a video game girl and I love synths and ’80s weird shit. So when I listen to this…”
“I think ‘Sever The Blight’ was one of my top songs because I was like, ‘This makes me feel something that a lot of things don’t because it’s so multidimensional,’” she continued. “And that is what I think you’re doing so effortlessly, you have so much nuance in everything you do.”
RuneScape recently celebrated its 25th anniversary by confirming some ambitious plans for 2026 and gave its brilliant soundtrack a bumper vinyl release. “Music is one of the ways we connect to players on an emotional level and it elevates the gaming experience,” said Grace Docksey, Jagex’s lead audio designer. “This collection represents some of RuneScape‘s most iconic music from over the last 25 years, as well as a few of our personal favourites. We hope listeners enjoy our musical journey through RuneScape’s history, whether they have just joined us or have been with us since the start.”
Meanwhile Chappell Roan is the current headline act of Fortnite Festival. To celebrate the collab, Epic Games released a gorgeous animated trailer that’s been praised for its “anti-AI” message.
In other news, Sony hosted a mammoth State Of Play presentation last night (February 12) that featured a number of huge announcements – check out all the best bits here.
