The Mummy stars Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz are confirmed to be returning for a fourth film, with a date confirmed.
The pair shot to fame in 1999 with the first Mummy film, an action adventure loosely based on the Universal monster movie of the same name. Fraser played adventurer Rick O’Connell, while Weisz starred as Evie Carnahan, later O’Connell, an academic on the hunt for the titular mummy.
It was a huge success, leading to two sequels both starring Fraser. Weisz would appear in the follow up, 2001’s The Mummy Returns, but her character would be played by Maria Bello in 2008 film The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor.
An attempt to reboot the franchise was made in 2017 with Tom Cruise’s big budget spectacle The Mummy, which was scheduled to be part of Universal Studios’ Dark Universe of connected horror movies, intended to include Javier Bardem as Frankenstein’s Monster, and Johnny Depp as The Invisible Man. However, the poor reception of Cruise’s film led to those future plans being scrapped.
Fraser has enjoyed a comeback in recent years, winning an Oscar for drama The Whale, and appearing in films such as Martin Scorsese’s Killers Of The Flower Moon. The renewed interest in the actor has led to calls for a revival of The Mummy franchise, and Variety has now confirmed that a fourth film will be going ahead.
In their report, both stars are slated to to return, with the film being directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, who directed the last two Scream films as well as hit horror Ready Or Not. The movie is scheduled for a release in cinemas on May 19, 2028
Aside from this revival, a more horror-focused version of The Mummy, directed by Lee Cronin, is heading to cinemas this April. Last month, the first trailer for the film, titled Lee Cronin’s The Mummy, arrived online.
