Idris Elba fined for speeding on his scooter

Sir Idris Elba has been fined after he was caught speeding while riding his scooter

A report by BBC News stated the actor was travelling at 28mph in a 20mph zone along Chelsea Embankment in London last June. He was given a £147 fine at Westminster Magistrates’ Court, as well as three penalty points on his licence. He was also ordered to pay £110 in costs and a £59 victim surcharge. The actor was not present for the sentencing.

The Metropolitan Police presented three images to the court showing Elba after his moped triggered a speed camera on June 21. They also said the Luther star “confirmed that they were the driver/rider at the time” after being contacted.

A spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police stated that Elba had been offered a fixed penalty for the offence, but he did not pay the fine, or provide details of his driving licence. Elba’s lawyers, Patterson Law, told the court the fixed penalty notice never arrived and that “if he received it, he absolutely would have accepted it”.

They added that the actor had a clean driving licence and was pleading guilty to the offence, thus avoiding trial.

As part of the New Year’s honours list announced in December, Sir Idris Elba was knighted for services to young people, having founded the Elba Hope Foundation and launching an anti-knife crime campaign.

The Golden Globe and SAG Award-winning actor is known for TV shows such as The Wire and Luther, as well as films such as Thor, Beasts Of No Nation, and Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom. He is currently in cinemas as part of the voice cast of Disney box office hit Zootropolis 2, and will be part of the forthcoming blockbuster Masters Of The Universe.

Last year, it was confirmed that the actor would be returning to the role of Luther in a new Netflix-produced feature film.
