Cyndi Lauper announces charity “closet clean out” to sell stage outfits and more in NYC

Cyndi Lauper has announced that she will be selling items from her closet to fans, in a bid to raise money for charity.

Details of the “closet clean out” were first announced on social media over the weekend, and revealed that the ‘80s pop icon will be sharing a number of her stage outfits and streetwear at a pop-up event in New York City.

It will be taking place at 192 Orchard Street, and open both today (Tuesday January 20) and tomorrow (Wednesday January 21). Fans will be able to visit in the opening hours of 1pm until 3pm.

“Step inside Cyndi Lauper’s world and shop a treasure trove of designer gems, stage and street wear, and many new or unworn pieces pulled straight from Cyndi’s closet,” the announcement read, also showing some custom made posters for the event.

It added that net proceeds from the sales will be donated to the Girls Just Want to Have Fundamental Rights Fund at the Tides Foundation.

The charity, Girls Just Want to Have Fundamental Rights, was co-founded by the ‘Time After Time’ singer back in 2022 “as a donor advised fund at the Tides Foundation to support efforts that advance women’s rights and health.”

On the official website, it explains that it works through “various fundraising efforts” and the “net proceeds will be granted to organisations that are having a positive impact on the lives of all women and girls”.

As well as making efforts to advance the fundamental rights and health of all women and girls with that charity, Lauper also co-founded the True Colors United charity back in 2008, which works to address the disproportionate rate of homelessness facing LGBTQ+ youth.

The sale in New York for charity comes just two months after the ‘Girls Just Want To Have Fun’ hitmaker was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame alongside the likes of The White Stripes, OutKast, Soundgarden, Joe Cocker and Bad Company.

It was Chappell Roan who inducted Lauper, and paid tribute to her by wearing a replica of the skirt from the ‘True Colors’ music video. The ‘Pink Pony Club’ singer also spoke about the impact that ‘True Colors’ had on her growing up, saying she sang it as a child in her hometown in Missouri.

The induction to the Rock Hall came after Lauper played the final show of her farewell tour last summer. While those dates have drawn to a close, she will be playing a handful of live shows this year at her first ever Las Vegas residency.

Those gigs will run from April 24 to May 2 and be held at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace. After that, there will be a one-off gig from Lauper at the Atlantis Bahamas Paradise Island on June 20. Visit here for tickets.
