Speculation over Mamma Mia 3 has been rife in recent years, with producer Judy Craymer saying back in 2020 that “there was meant to be a trilogy”. The original adaptation of the ABBA jukebox musical came out in 2008 with the sequel, Here We Go Again, arriving in 2018.
Following his recent win for Best Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture for his performance in Sentimental Value at the Golden Globes, Skarsgård addressed Streep’s future in the franchise.
In 2018’s prequel-slash-sequel, Streep’s Donna dies off-screen from an unspecified illness. Skarsgård, who played Bill, one of Donna’s former flings, said of her potential return: “She can be brought back from the dead.”
“Everybody can be brought back from the dead in the movies – and in the movies, she’s fantastic,” Skarsgård said, per People. “A lot of people are working on it, to bring her back.”
Other actors involved in the films have heavily hinted that they too could return. Christine Baranski, who played Tanya Chesham-Leigh, had previously said that she had met with producer Judy Craymer to discuss the project, and a few months later, Pierce Brosnan revealed he had also met with her.
Last year, Sabrina Carpenter was also linked to a role in a possible third outing of the hit frnachise, speculation fuelled by an interview Craymer gave Deadline at the time, when she hinted that the ‘House Tour’ singer could be involved in the film too.
Elsewhere last year, franchise star Amanda Seyfried further stoked the rumours by saying she’d like Carpenter in a third iteration of the movie – as well as her Housemaid co-star Sydney Sweeney.
Now, in a new interview with Entertainment Tonight at the Governors Awards, Seyfried was asked about where a third Mamma Mia film was up to. “Maybe I’m just naive, but I’m pretty sure Mamma Mia 3 is a done deal,” she told the outlet.
She then added: “I love portraying a mum, so I would love to see Sophie [her character in the film] with her kids. Maybe she has a cousin she hasn’t seen in a while, and that could be Sabrina Carpenter. And then Sydney Sweeney could show up. There’s a bunch of girls that really want to be a part of it, and I’m all for it.”
