The upcoming God Of War live-action adaptation has cast a video game veteran to play Kratos – but it’s probably not the one you’re expecting.

Ryan Hurst played Kratos’ rival Thor in 2022’s God Of War: Ragnarok but will be taking on the role of Kratos for Amazon Prime Video’s upcoming adaptation.

“Kratos is Spartan by birth, and a god by nature. Raised in a martial culture, he rose to command armies in service of his homeland until one day he made a fateful deal with Ares, the Greek God of War and lost his soul in exchange for being victorious in battle,” explains a press release.

According to Variety, Prime Video’s God Of War series will take influence from the two most recent games (2018’s God Of War and Ragnarok). “Father and son Kratos and Atreus embark on a journey to spread the ashes of their wife and mother, Faye. Through their adventures, Kratos tries to teach his son to be a better god, while Atreus tries to teach his father how to be a better human.”

Hurst previously played Beta in The Walking Dead and Opie in Sons Of Anarchy. He’s also appeared in Saving Private Ryan, We Were Soldiers and is set to star in Christopher Nolan’s upcoming history epic The Odyssey

Kratos’ voice actor Christopher Judge congratulated Hurst on the role. “You’re gonna be great,” he wrote on social media shortly after the news was confirmed. Back in 2023, he criticised rumours Dave Bautista was in talks to play the part.

Congrats Ryan!!!! You’re gonna be great… BOI !!! https://t.co/H9pYahlpoU

“Congratulations to Ryan Hurst who will be stepping into the role of Kratos for the upcoming God Of War live action series! We’re excited to see his take on Kratos as he joins the legendary ranks of T.C. Carson and Christopher Judge who have each shaped this character in unforgettable ways,” added game developers Sony Santa Monica.

Prime Video has already ordered two seasons of God Of War, with Ronald D. Moore as showrunner. There’s currently no release date for the show and filming is set to begin later this year. Moore previously angered fans by admitting he hadn’t actually played the video game series.

In other news, former Call Of Duty boss Bobby Kotick has claimed that low Black Ops 7 sales are due to competition from Battlefield 6.
