Elon Musk has claimed AI will be able to create and release Grand Theft Auto 6 before the official launch of the highly-anticipated sequel later this year.

In 2023, Musk promised that his new AI studio xAI was going to “make games great again” but over the past twelve months, the billionaire has focused on controversial Twitter chatbot Grok instead.
Late last year, he said he still intends to enter the world of video games and claimed that he’ll “will release a great AI-generated game before the end” of 2026. He also said that Grok will be able to make a “watchable” movie by the end of 2026 with “really good” movies following in 2027.
Now, Musk reckons AI will be able to beat Rockstar in creating Grand Theft Auto 6. “There’s definitely a non-zero chance we get ‘generate your own GTA 6 in a few minutes’ before GTA 6,” wrote AI tech CEO Guillermo Rauch, with Musk agreeing with the prediction.

“We have text-to-image and text-to-video, so text-to-GTA is the next logical step in generative AI,” added Epic Games boss Tim Sweeney. “You won’t even have to ask. AI will figure what video game you’d like best,” replied Musk.
Rockstar have been working on Grand Theft Auto 6 since 2014 with development ramping up after the release of Red Dead Redemption 2 in 2018. The game had been set to release last year but was delayed to November 19, 2026 to give developers more time to “polish” the release. However one recent report claims the game still isn’t finished, with levels and missions still being added.
Earlier this week, new Lara Croft voice actor Alix Wilton Regan quit Twitter over AI deepfakes that were made and shared using X’s own Grok tool. “Why did I do it? Because men and boys are creating child pornography, deep fakes of women, violent images against women, girls and other minority groups without any repercussions,” she explained. “So, it’s simple: If Elon won’t protect me, my sisters and my friends, then Elon doesn’t get my business or – more accurately – me as part of his business.”
Musk previously complained that “too many game studios are owned by massive corporations” and said it’s “really annoying when a video game gets interrupted by some [diversity, equity, and inclusion] woke bullshit.”
He also confirmed that his daughter Comet Azure was named after an Elden Ring spell.
In other news, the upcoming God Of War live-action adaptation has cast a video game veteran to play Kratos – but it’s probably not the one you’re expecting.
