The comedian hosted the ceremony for the second successive year this past weekend, and took aim at the assembled actors up for awards. Among the highlights was a joke about Leonardo DiCaprio’s dating life, but Glaser revealed to The Howard Stern Show (via People) that there would have been a punchline about Sweeney’s recent film had the star been in attendance.
The joke in question would have poked fun at the box office failure of Sweeney’s boxing biopic Christy. “Tonight is a night of celebration but we can’t ignore that it’s a weird time in Hollywood. People just aren’t going to the theatre to see things” she said. “If you don’t believe me, there was a movie this year where Sydney Sweeney played a lesbian who just bounced around in tiny shorts for two hours and it made $14.”
Released in November, Christy saw the Euphoria star play Christy Martin, a real life legendary women’s boxer who is openly gay. The film disappointed at the box office, making just $2million (£1.4million) from a $15million (£11.2million) budget.
Despite the disappointment, Sweeney backed the project, saying “We don’t always just make art for numbers, we make it for impact”. Reports surrounding her political beliefs, and a controversial American Eagle jeans commercial, led to actor Ruby Rose criticising the actor playing an LGBTQ+ figure, and calling the star a “cretin.”
The real-life Martin would defend Sweeney following the backlash, saying: “Syd not only worked her ass off for this film, she worked her ass off for me.”
One Battle After Another, Hamnet, and the cast of Adolescence also came away with big wins at the Golden Globes, which celebrate both television and film.
