Last March, Pokémon confirmed it would be working with Lego on a series of releases to celebrate the franchises’ 30th anniversary. After plenty of online speculation, the first wave of Pokémon Lego was unveiled yesterday (January 12).

“By combining Pokémon’s sense of adventure with the thoughtful design and attention to detail of the LEGO Group, we’re giving fans the chance to build, play and tell their own stories in ways they’ve never experienced before – something we’re thrilled to see come to life,” said The Pokémon Company’s Gaku Susai.

“Pokémon has inspired generations of fans around the world, so our team approached the design of these sets with immense care and passion, ensuring every detail and pose truly celebrates what makes these characters so beloved, ” added Lego designer Siddharth Muthyala.

A model of Eevee will set you back £54.99 while the Pikachu + Pokeball model is £179.99. A huge model of the final evolutions of the Kanto starters (Venusaur, Charizard and Blastiose) is priced at £579.99. Made up of 6838 bricks, it’s one of the biggest sets in Lego history.

However some fans are outraged at how much Lego is charging for the Pokémon. “That is absolutely insane. For that price, you can buy a brand new Nintendo Switch 2 plus the last two Pokémon games. I know which choice is going to feel more worthwhile,” wrote one fan on Reddit. “Boy, that starter set is really cool. That price is too much for me, unfortunately,” added another. “I don’t mean to sound negative here, but seeing that all the Lego Pokémon sets are veered towards an adult audience is incredibly disappointing. Kids gain nothing from having two of their most popular brands combining when they cash in on only nostalgia,” said a third.

Other fans have pointed out that the price-per-brick cost of the Pokémon set matches that of other collaborations including Star Wars, Lord Of The Rings, Stranger Things and The Legend Of Zelda.

Despite the backlash, pre-orders for the Venusaur, Charizard and Blastiose model are currently sold out on the Lego website, with more set to go live on release date (February 27). Successful orders will come with a collection of eight Lego gym badges, inspired by the hit video game series, while stocks last. A smaller model of a Pokémon Centre will be available for Lego Insiders members.

Successful pre-orders are also being resold on eBay. In recent months, the official Pokémon Trading Card Game has seen an influx of scalpers pushing up the price of cards but while those are released as limited drops, Lego will continue to make the Blastoise, Venusaur and Charizard model for as long as people are purchasing.

In other news, Nintendo has confirmed which GameCube titles will be coming to the Nintendo Switch 2 in the near future as part of their Online Library.
