James Cameron has criticised a twist in the 1992 film Alien 3 that killed off characters he created in the previous film.

In 1986, the Avatar filmmaker directed Aliens, a sequel to Ridley Scott’s original Alien movie that is beloved for its more action-focused narrative. The film introduced popular characters such as Corporal Hicks (Michael Biehn), android Bishop (Lance Henriksen), and young orphan Newt (Carrie Henn). The latter became a surrogate daughter for the lead, Ellen Ripley (Sigourney Weaver).

Early on in Alien 3, however, the characters are killed off when their escape vehicle crashes onto a prison planet, with only Ripley surviving. Directed by David Fincher in his debut feature, the film is a divisive departure from previous movies, with Fincher himself disowning the movie due to studio interference.

Speaking to Biehn on the actor’s Just Foolin’ Around podcast, Cameron expressed his frustration that the characters were disposed of so quickly.

“I thought that was the stupidest fucking thing,” he said, adding, “So, you build a lot of goodwill around the characters of you know, Hicks, Newt and Bishop, and then the first thing they do in the in the next film is kill them all off, right? Really smart guys, you know, and replace them with a bunch of fucking convicts that you hate. And want to see die. Really clever.”

He would exclude the film’s director from his criticism, however. “Now, I’m a big fan of Fincher and his work and all that,” he explained. “And that was his first feature film, and he was getting vectored around by a lot of other voices and all that. So, I give him a free pass on that one.”

Biehn agreed, saying that Fincher has been “handed a bowl of shit”, and sharing an incident where he told the director to “go fuck yourself” after his likeness was used without his permission. “I wonder why you’ve never been cast in a David Fincher film” Cameron jokingly replied.

Currently promoting the third Avatar film, Fire And Ash, James Cameron has recently been vocal about a few incidents from the past. He dismissed Matt Damon’s assertion that the star was offered the lead in the first Avatar movie, and also expressed disappointment at a joke Amy Poehler made about him at the Golden Globes in 2013.
