Last week, Netflix announced that it was set to buy Warner Bros Discovery with the deal including the DC universe, streaming service HBO Max and Warner-owned gaming studios.
However in a new interview, Netflix co-CEO Gregory Peters has revealed that the streamer has no immediate plans for video games. “While they definitely have been doing some great work in the game space, we actually didn’t attribute any value to that from the get-go because they’re relatively minor compared to the grand scheme of things,” he explained during an investors Q+A.
“Now, we are super excited because some of those properties that they’ve built, Hogwarts Legacy is a great example of that, have been done quite well. We think that we can incorporate that into what we’re offering. They’ve got great studios and great folks working there. So we think that there’s definitely an opportunity there. But just to be clear, we haven’t built that into our deal model.”

Netflix has offered games to its subscribers since 2021 but last year, it shut down its ambition in-house game studio Team Blue which had been set up to create the “next big thing in gaming.” Despite Stranger Things, Squid Game and Black Mirror-inspired games, it’s been reported that less than 1 per cent of Netflix’s 221million subscribers play games on the streamer.
2024 was a bad year for Warner Bros. Games with titles such as Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League and the Super Smash Bros.-style brawler MultiVersus “substantially underperforming”. Because of this, CEO David Zaslav said the company would be focusing on four franchises going forward – Harry Potter, Mortal Kombat, Game Of Thrones and DC, “in particular Batman.”
Warner Bros. went on to confirm that a sequel to Hogwarts Legacy was their “highest priority” and was planned to tie into the HBO adaptation of Harry Potter, which is due to launch in 2027. However, it’s not yet known how the Netflix deal will affect these plans.
There are also doubts if the Netflix deal will go through, with Donald Trump voicing concerns and Paramount launching a rival bid.
In other news, visionary director Guillermo Del Toro has revealed his favourite video games with his list including the “cinematic” God Of War.
