Violet Grohl has released her debut solo single ‘THUM’ – check it out here.

The daughter of Foo Fighters and Nirvana legend Dave announced ‘THUM’ and B-side ‘Applefish’ in an Instagram post on Friday night (December 5). The songs are available as a 7-inch vinyl – which you can find on Bandcamp – while ‘THUM’ is also available for streaming.

“I’m beyond excited to finally share a little bit of what I’ve been working on over the last year,” she wrote. “I made these tracks with the most badass group of musicians, so happy they’re finally yours :).”

While Violet has sometimes performed jazz and folk songs on videos she’s shared to social media, the punchy ‘THUM’ leans into alternative rock, with fans on Reddit comparing the single to Queens Of The Stone Age and Them Crooked Vultures. You can listen to it yourself below.

‘Applefish’, which is only available via digital purchase or vinyl, is slower and more cinematic, showcasing Violet’s vocals.

Violet’s announcement comes a year after the 19-year-old was rumoured to be working on her debut album with producer Justin Raisen (Kim Gordon, Charli XCX, Sky Ferreira). On her post, Raisen simply commented, “Bebe”.

Rapper Flavor Flav, meanwhile, commented, “WOOWWW!!! Way to go my girl!!!!” while her sister, Harper, showed her support by writing, “Yesssssss”.

Previously, Violet released a cover version of ‘Nausea’, originally by Los Angeles punks X, alongside Dave in 2021. But it wasn’t the first time she had worked with her father.

In 2018, she began hitting the road with the Foo Fighters, providing backing vocals for her father during several gigs.

She also performed with them at the tribute concerts held for late Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins in 2022, in which she covered Jeff Buckley‘s ‘Last Goodbye’ and ‘Grace’ and The Zutons‘ ‘Valerie’.

In 2023, she was featured on the Foos’ single ‘Show Me How’, and she appeared with them at Glastonbury 2023 for the song, which Dave wrote for his mother.

And when the surviving members of Nirvana – Dave, Krist Novoselic and Pat Smear – reunited for a four-song set at the Fire Aid benefit concert in Los Angeles, Violet joined for lead vocals on the final song, ‘All Apologies’.

Foo Fighters, meanwhile, are heading out on a mammoth European stadium tour next year, including dates at Liverpool’s Anfield. Tickets are on sale now, and you can find them here.
