Tom Cruise fans think he should receive honorary Oscar for his stuntwork

Tom Cruise fans believe the Mission: Impossible star should receive an honorary Oscar for his stuntwork.

It comes after the The Academy (Oscars) announced a new award category for stunt design.

The Achievement in Stunt Design award will make its debut at the annual ceremony beginning in 2028, where it will honour stunt work in films from 2027.

Despite that, many fans have already dubbed it the “Tom Cruise Award” and believe he should be honoured for his stuntwork on the Mission: Impossible franchise anyway.

“Tom Cruise should get the first stunt category Oscar as a lifetime achievement award,” one wrote, while another added: “They should give Tom Cruise and the whole Mission: Impossible stunt team an Honorary Oscar for their contributions to stunt community.”

A third fan wrote: “What is wrong with them, why would they not introduce it this year so they can give the first one to Tom Cruise for the last Mission Impossible movie … are they dumb,” while another quipped: “Tom Cruise realising he has to make Mission Impossible 9 now, so he can win a Stunt Oscar.”

More than 100 stunt professionals are members of the Academy’s Production and Technology Branch, and they have been campaigning for many years for a specific Oscar to recognise their skills.

Ryan Gosling also highlighted the issue last year during promotion for The Fall Guy.

“This movie is just a giant campaign to get stunts an Oscar category,” he joked at the film’s premiere (via The Independent). “We are the face of these films, but the crews really make the movies, and this is a love letter to them.”

Meanwhile, Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning is due to hit cinemas on May 23 and will star Cruise along with Hayley Atwell, Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Esai Morales, Pom Klementieff, Vanessa Kirby and more.

The Final Reckoning director Christopher McQuarrie recently hosted a small screening for the film, where he revealed that he overheard an audience member saying they nearly suffered a heart attack while watching a high-octane action scene.
