The third season opened with a flash forward that saw Zion, the son of White Lotus Maui spa manager Belinda (Natasha Rothwell) join his mother on a visit to a sister location in Ko Samui, Thailand. His meditation session at the resort is interrupted by repeated gunfire nearby. While scrambling through a pond to look for his mother, Zion discovers a dead body.

The timeline then shifts back one week to introduce the main cast for this season. Various theories have appeared online, with one popular hypothesis being that the island’s monkeys got hold of a gun and began shooting indiscriminately.

Appearing on Jimmy Kimmel Live, Monaghan, who plays Jaclyn Lemon in the show, addressed the rumours. “You know, I’ve just got to debunk a theory out here. Guys, the monkeys did not do it!” she insisted. “People have gone ape shit thinking that”.

When asked who the shooter may be, the actor refused to rule out her character’s involvement. “Well, I don’t know. You’ll have to watch” she said. “Maybe I go a little bananas. Maybe”. She also revealed that friends in the industry have asked if Jaclyn, an actress in the show, is based on them. “It’s not based on anyone” she confirmed.

With only two episodes left in the third season, viewers, actors, and even academic institutions have been scandalised by the episodes so far. An incest storyline between Saxon (Patrick Schwarzenegger) and Lochlan (Sam Nivola) was described by fans as “absolute chaos”, while even Nivola found some explicit scenes “stressful” to shoot.

Elsewhere, American college Duke University hit out at The White Lotus for using its merchandise in a murder-suicide scene.
