NEWBEAT is a seven-member Korean boy group under Beat Interactive, with members Park Minseok, Hong Minsung, Jeon Yeoyeojeong, Choi Seohyun, Kim Taeyang, Jo Yunhu, and Kim Riwoo.
Before their official debut, the NEWBEAT members established themselves as versatile performers by actively participating in music videos and live performances alongside the senior group A.C.E. Their pre-debut period was marked by significant international exposure, particularly during the summer of 2024. In July and August, they showcased their dance skills at KCON LA, where they performed as backup dancers for A.C.E, demonstrating their technical prowess and stage presence.
The group’s creativity and collaborative spirit were further highlighted by their HIGH&LOW Donuts busking tour across the United States. This innovative project saw the NEWBEAT members joining forces with multiple underground dance crews, creating dynamic street performances that blended various dance styles and musical influences. The tour not only allowed them to hone their performance skills but also provided a platform to connect directly with diverse audiences, building support and credibility before their official debut.
These pre-debut experiences were crucial in shaping the group’s identity, offering them valuable stage experience, international exposure, and the opportunity to network within the dance and music communities. Their journey exemplified their commitment to thrive outside traditional debut pathways.
The group released two pre-release singles, “JeLLo (Sleepers)” and “HICCUPS” earlier this month and they made their official debut on March 24 with their first full album, RAW AND RAD with the title track “Flip that Coin.”
NEWBEAT is centered around a powerful message of individuality and self-acceptance, symbolized by their mascot Neurocorn – a unicorn without a horn who learns to embrace its uniqueness. Through their pre-release tracks “JeLLo” and “HICCUPS”, the group aims to introduce their artistic universe and member personalities while building anticipation for their debut.
The group mphasizes that being different is not wrong, and they seek to connect with audiences by exploring themes of freedom, challenge, and ambition through their music. Their distinctive approach lies in creating meaningful music that resonates with people who may have felt different or out of place at various stages of life.
In a bold move rare for rookie groups these days, NEWBEAT took on the challenge to release an 11-song full-length album that immediately showcased the depth and versatility of their artistic vision. This unconventional approach reflects the group’s core philosophy of breaking boundaries and challenging expectations, a theme that will likely resonate throughout their musical journey.
RAW AND RAD carefully crafted narrative that explores the complexities of youth, personal growth, and self-discovery. By choosing to release a comprehensive body of work rather than a typical single or mini-album, NEWBEAT demonstrates their commitment to providing a rich, immersive musical experience that goes beyond surface-level entertainment.
Throughout their preparation, the members leaned heavily on the guidance of experienced producers and senior artists, absorbing wisdom that would shape both their musical approach and personal development. This collaborative process allowed them to refine their sound, develop their artistic identity, and build the resilience necessary for success in the competitive music industry.
KW: Is there a certain lyric from a song on your album that you identify with the most?
Jeon Yeoyeojeong: In our song “We Are Young,” there’s a part in the chorus that goes “running through this tough world,” which I think fits our situation well and seems like something everyone can relate to.
Behind the scenes, the group worked meticulously to create an album that would authentically represent their collective and individual experiences. They received guidance from mentors who could provide insights not just about music, but about navigating the challenges of the entertainment world.
KW: Is there any advice that you have received from your seniors that has helped you while preparing for your debut?
Jo Yunhu: Jun from A.C.E. gave me advice on taking care of mental health. He said that it’s important to remind yourself that you are going to do well, so trust yourself and enjoy the process. This is something I try to remember whenever I feel challenged and want to recover my mental well-being.
By embracing a holistic approach to their debut—combining musical innovation, personal storytelling, and a supportive collaborative environment—NEWBEAT has positioned themselves as storytellers, advocates for personal growth, and new champions of individual expression.
