The year was 2001. The digital revolution was still a nascent hum, a promise whispered on the breeze of dial-up modems. My world, however, felt far from revolutionary. My marriage, a crumbling edifice of unspoken resentments, was nearing its inevitable collapse. Escape, in any form, was a desperate necessity.
And then, I found it: a used laptop, a bulky behemoth that promised a world beyond the confines of my dissolving reality. Alongside it, a program called “MTV Music Generator” by Jester Interactive, a simple interface built upon a library of pre-made loops, but to me, it was a lifeline.
I dove into that digital sandbox, I lost myself in the rhythmic pulse of those loops, manipulating, layering, and sculpting them into something distinctly unique. A persona emerged from the digital ether: “DOPEKITTY” a moniker as quirky and rebellious as the music I was creating.
The laptop became my confidante, the music generator my therapist. Each track was a cathartic release, a sonic expression of the turmoil and longing that swirled within me. I called the album “On The Move,” sixteen tracks of raw, retro techno, a soundscape that echoed the driving synth-pop of the era.
Years blurred into decades. The laptop long gone, the music relegated to a forgotten corner of my hard drive. Life, as it always does, moved on. But “On The Move” remained, a digital time capsule of a pivotal chapter.
Now, in 2025, the digital landscape has transformed. Streaming platforms dominate, and the world is connected in ways I couldn’t have imagined in 2001. A strange impulse, a nostalgic yearning, led me back to those forgotten tracks. I listened, and a wave of memories washed over me. The raw emotion, the driving rhythms, the sheer audacity of my digital creation – it resonated still.
And so, “On The Move” is finally seeing the light of day. Released onto the digital ether, it’s a testament to the power of creative expression, a snapshot of a moment in time, a soundtrack to a journey.
If you’re looking for something to accompany a late-night drive, a soundtrack reminiscent of the carefree energy of Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, a blast of retro techno that pulsates with the spirit of a bygone era, then give “On The Move” by DOPEKITTY a listen on your favorite streaming platform. Follow along as one release per month comes until all 16 tracks are available.
