Superman director James Gunn has defended the movie’s latest teaser after fans voiced their concerns.
After a new trailer aired on Sunday (January 26), showing Superman flying through frozen tundra, fans suggested that computer-generated imagery had been used to alter the face of David Corenswet, who plays the titular superhero.
While some fans were unhappy, another took to Threads to express that the teaser “looks dope” with a “great camera angle of Superman flying,” – but added: “Except there’s something in his face that looks a little off. I know there’s plenty of time to refine the CG.”
Gunn replied: “There is absolutely zero CG in his face. People’s faces can look different when you put a wide-angle lens up close. The background plate in Svalbard is 100% real as is David.”
Some other unhappy Superman fans then responded to this, too, saying, “I believe him” and “We can tell.”

Others turned Corenswet’s Superman into a meme, editing the faces of characters such as Steve Buscemi’s Crazy Eyes (Mr. Deeds) and Marty Feldman’s Igor (Young Frankenstein) onto his own.

Meanwhile, fans of Henry Cavill, who played Superman from 2013 to 2023, also expressed their disappointment – one calling Corenswet a “downgrade” on his fellow actor.
Others are happy with the trailers and excited for the movie, however, one writing on X (Twitter): “Every time I see anything about it I’m giddy. Bright, dynamic & just the right amount of goofy. Already looking like the most ‘Supermany’ Superman flick. General audience is poised and ready for the Man of Steel.”

The new teaser follows the first trailer, which came out in December and showed Krypto the Superdog in live-action for the first time.
Superman is set for release on July 11, and the reboot of the iconic series is set to become the first movie in the DC Universe (DCU), a soft reboot of the old DC Extended Universe which will have a united continuity across all works. It’ll be followed next year by Supergirl: Woman Of Tomorrow and Clayface.
Alongside Corenswet, Rachel Brosnahan plays his love interest Lois Lane, while Nicholas Hoult, Edi Gathegi, Anthony Carrigan, Nathan Fillion and Isabela Merced all feature too. Jack Quaid, meanwhile, said last year that he auditioned for the title role, admitting: “I didn’t get very far.”
