The first Resident Evil movie was released in 2002 with Milla Jovovich’s Alice working with soldiers to contain an outbreak of the T-Virus, which turns people into zombies. The film borrowed elements from 1996’s original Resident Evil and the 1998 sequel but also took a lot of creative liberties with the lore of the survival horror franchise.

Five more movies in the Resident Evil series were released before 2021 reboot Resident Evil: Welcome To Racoon City.

Welcome To Racoon City also took heavy inspiration from the first two Resident Evil games but was met with mixed reviews. Now another new reboot is in the works, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Written by Zach Cregger, the creator of celebrated horror mystery Barbarian, the new film will reportedly take the series back to its horror roots and “be more faithful” to the early Resident Evil games.

The report goes on to say Cregger’s film is the subject of a bidding war, with four studios including Netflix and Warner Bros. interested in the project. Shay Hatten (John Wick: Chapter 4, Army Of The Dead) is co-writing the script while PlayStation will produce the film.

The most recent entry in the series was a remake of 2005’s Resident Evil 4, which launched in 2023. Capcom is currently developing a ninth entry in the franchise.

Earlier this year, it was reported Sony were also working on a live-action adaptation of Helldivers 2 and  Horizon Zero Dawn. An anime adaptation of Ghost Of Tsushima is also in the works and will premiere in 2027.

“Having already proven the immense quality and versatility of our gaming properties across multiple successful film and television projects, we couldn’t be more excited to announce our first ever anime adaptation,” explained head of PlayStation Productions Asad Qizilbash. “Ghost Of Tsushima’s rich, immersive world and its fantastical Legends mode based on Japanese mythology provide the perfect canvas for this project.”

In other news, Call Of Duty: Black Ops 6 was the biggest selling game in America last year, according to a new report. Call Of Duty has topped the chart 13 times in the past 16 years.
