Dark Horse Comics cuts ties with Neil Gaiman and cancels several projects

Dark Horse Comics have announced they have cut ties with Neil Gaiman and cancelled all upcoming collaborations with the writer.

The influential American publisher has had a long-standing relationship with Gaiman, having overseen adaptations of several of the author’s fantasy titles, including American Gods and Norse Mythology.

Last July, Gaiman was accused of sexual assault by five women, who told Tortoise Media that they had experienced “rough and degrading” sex which they claim was not always consensual. Gaiman denied the allegations, but subsequently stepped down from the final season of Prime Video’s adaptation of Good Omens.

Earlier this month, further details of alleged sexual assault emerged against Gaiman, with four women detailing their experiences with the writer. Gaiman wrote a lengthy post denying the further accusations, insisting that “some of the horrible stories now being told simply never happened.”

Now, Dark Horse has posted on social media to make clear that they no longer wish to be associated with the author. “Dark Horse takes seriously the allegations against Neil Gaiman and we are no longer publishing his works,” they wrote. “Confirming that the Anansi Boys comic series and collected volume have been cancelled.”

Gaiman, known for works including The Sandman and Coraline, added in his latest post that he has “regrets” over being “careless” and “selfish” with his actions. “I am prepared to take responsibility for any missteps I made,” he wrote.

“Over the past many months, I have watched the stories circulating the internet about me with horror and dismay. I’ve stayed quiet until now, both out of respect for the people who were sharing their stories and out of a desire not to draw even more attention to a lot of misinformation. I’ve always tried to be a private person, and felt increasingly that social media was the wrong place to talk about important personal matters.

“I’ve now reached the point where I feel that I should say something. I have never engaged in non-consensual sexual activity with anyone. Ever”.

Gaiman’s former wife Amanda Palmer has also recently responded to the story, with the former Dresden Dolls singer telling NME that while she is “profoundly disturbed” by the allegations, “her primary concern is, and must remain, the well-being of her son and therefore, to guard his privacy, she has no comment on these allegations.”

Taking to Instagram soon after, Palmer added: “As there are ongoing custody and divorce proceedings, I am not able to offer public comment. Please understand that I am first and foremost a parent. I ask for privacy at this time.”

Last year, a petition was launched to bring back the Netflix series Dead Boy Detectives – based on Gaiman’s comic book series – after it was axed in the wake of the sexual abuse claims.

The third season of Good Omens was in the early stages of pre-production and had been earmarked to start filming in Scotland this month. The fantasy comedy series was renewed for a final season in December 2023.
