Stranger Things star Finn Wolfhard is making his debut behind the camera for horror/comedy Hell Of A Summer, which has just released its first Redband trailer.

Wolfhard, best known for the role of Mike Wheeler in the Netflix show, has written and co-directed the film alongside actor Billy Bryk. Both film-makers also have acting roles in the movie, which stars Fred Hechinger (Gladiator II) as a man in his twenties who can’t seem to let go of the summer camp experience.

The official synopsis for the film reads: “Hell of a Summer follows 24-year-old camp counsellor Jason Hochberg (Hechinger), who arrives at Camp Pineway thinking his biggest problem is that he feels out of touch with his teenage co-workers. What he doesn’t know is that a masked killer is lurking on the campgrounds, brutally picking counsellors off one by one”.

The trailer embraces the cliches of slasher movies, being set in a summer camp, having gory kills, and having characters reference certain horror tropes like ominously saying the phone lines have been cut. The film had its international premiere back in 2023’s Toronto Film Festival, and is slated to be released in the US on April 18. A UK release date has yet to be announced.

It’s part of a big year for Wolfhard, who will star in the final season of Stranger Things, set for release at some point this year. He recently commented on the show wrapping the season five filming, saying: “I’ll miss all of my friends and our characters terribly”.

While little is known about the content of the season, the titles for each episode were released last November, with the makers confirming it will be set in “the fall of 1978”. Wolfhard’s co-star, Millie Bobby Brown, shared a video of her tearfully saying goodbye to the show’s cast and crew.
