The last instalment in the ongoing Final Fantasy 7 Remake project won’t be a PlayStation 6 exclusive, said series producer Yoshinori Kitase.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake was released in April 2020 as a PlayStation 4 exclusive before launching on PC at the end of 2021. The second part of the trilogy Rebirth launched as a PlayStation 5 exclusive at the beginning of 2024 and is finally coming to PC later this week. Both games are still unavailable on Xbox and Nintendo Switch consoles.

Because of the four-year gap between parts one and two, fans have been worried they’ll need to buy the PlayStation 6 (which is also rumoured to have a 2027 launch) to play the third and final Final Fantasy 7 Remake game. However Kitase has denied that. “No, you can rest assured about the next one,” he told Japanese publication 4Gamer (via Video Game Chronicle).

He also revealed development for the next Final Fantasy 7 Remake started as soon as Rebirth was released. “We’ve been developing it for about nine months already”.

Kitase says part 3 of the FF7 Remake Trilogy will not be a next-gen PS6 exclusive like Remake and Rebirth were PS4 and PS5 gen exclusives!

Kitase didn’t confirm if Square Enix is looking to release the next game on PC and PlayStation simultaneously, or if it’s simply being created for the PlayStation 5.

However earlier this year, Square Enix once again hinted at an Xbox release for the series. After reports that both Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth and Final Fantasy 16 failed to meet to company’s sale expectations, Kitase told IGN: “While we are confident and pleased that we are reaching a certain level of sales, it is clear that with the modernity of gaming, we cannot be exclusive to a single platform. I think we need to offer the game to as many players as possible.”

Final Fantasy 16’s director Naoki Yoshida recently said he wants to release the game on Xbox, while Remake’s co-director Naoki Hamaguchi said he wanted to “bring Final Fantasy 7 and the Remake series to as many players out there as possible.”

It’s also been rumoured Final Fantasy 7 Remake could be coming to the Nintendo Switch 2 alongside a number of other games previously unavailable on Nintendo consoles.

Last year, it was revealed a planned DLC for Rebirth was scrapped so developers could focus on the third game in the series.

In other news, it’s been confirmed that Pokémon Trading Card Game Pocket will get a new wave of cards and the long-awaited trade feature next week.
