Last week, the Supreme Court confirmed video-sharing social media site TikTok would be banned in the United States over supposed risks to national security, due to the platform’s ties to China.
Ahead of a full ban on Sunday (January 19), TikTok voluntarily shut down in America. Users trying to access the app were told “sorry, TikTok isn’t available right now. A law banning TikTok has been enacted in the U.S. Unfortunately, that means you can’t use TikTok for now.”
However shortly after Donald Trump was sworn in as President, TikTok was made available once more.
“We thank President Trump for providing the necessary clarity and assurance to our service providers that they will face no penalties,” said a statement. “We will work with President Trump on a long-term solution that keeps TikTok in the United States.”
However popular free-to-play mobile card game Marvel Snap has also been caught up in the TikTok ban. American players trying to log in over the weekend were presented with a message that explained: “A law banning Marvel Snap has been enacted in the US. Unfortunately that means you can’t use Marvel Snap right now. Rest assured we are working to restore our service.”

Developers Second Dinner said the ban was a “surprise” but reassured fans the game “isn’t going anywhere.” However Marvel Snap is still unavailable in the US despite TikTok being restored.
“We’ve been working around the clock to bring Marvel Snap back up in the US and hope to have it back online within 24 hours,” Second Dinner said in the early hours of this morning (January 20). We’ll update you once it’s back up. In the meantime, global players should be able to continue to play with no issues.”
No reason has been given for the ban but Marvel Snap is published by Nuverse, who is owned by TikTok’s parent company ByteDance. Posting on Discord, Second Dinner have confirmed players will be “compensated” for any rewards that have been missed due to the downtime.
In other news, several reports claim that Nintendo is set to hold a special Direct presentation next month, focusing on new games for the Switch. It comes after the Switch 2 was officially unveiled last week.
