Boyzone: No Matter What is a three-part documentary series examining the rise of the Irish boyband, including behind-the-scenes looks at them at the height of their success, their struggles with the paparazzi, fall-outs within the band, and tension with manager Louis Walsh.
The official synopsis reads: “They were one of the most successful and iconic boybands of all time – but behind-the-scenes, conflict and rivalry, betrayal and tragedy led to their falling apart. Now, thirty years on, all four remaining members – Ronan Keating, Keith Duffy, Shane Lynch and Michael ‘Mikey’ Graham, as well as their estranged manager, Louis Walsh – reveal the truth of what really happened, the extraordinary highs of their meteoric rise to fame, and the huge costs that being in a boyband had on each of them.”
Boyzone formed in 1993, put together by Walsh, and went on to release seven studio albums, five of which made it to Number One in the UK. They split up in 1999, making a comeback in 2007, before reuniting for a 25th anniversary tour and album in 2018.
The trailer includes a look at interviews with each of the four remaining band members, reflecting on old footage of their performances and TV appearances. Walsh also appears, with Lynch saying that he “promised them the sun, moon and stars”. Walsh is then shown, saying: “They believed their own publicity. They forgot I wrote it.”
The documentary series will also cover the death of member Stephen Gately as a result of a congenital heart defect in 2009. Gately in particular faced scrutiny from the tabloids during his time in the band, and came out as gay in 1999 to avoid details of his sexuality being made public by the media. The trailer includes a shot of a visibly tearful Keating as he recounts having to call the other band members to tell them the news of Gately’s death.
The trailer closes with Keating saying: “I made choices I’m not proud of. After 30 years, now’s the time to talk about it.”
Boyzone: No Matter What comes to Sky Documentaries and NOW from February 2.
