Sony recently filed a new patent for technology that sees AI predict what a player’s next move will be, allowing games to react faster to commands.

Reported by tech4gamers, the system could use cameras to monitor how an individual plays a game before using that information to predict future moves. Rather than playing a game for you though, the tech would reduce the time it takes for games to react to controller inputs.

“One of the technical challenges facing computer game system engineers and players alike is the need for effective input actions that are not mistimed or missed completely by the game system since that can adversely affect gameplay,” explained Sony.

“Specifically, user input actions might be performed using physical buttons on a video game controller. These actions are then processed by the game system to interact with the game content, but there can be latency between the user’s input action and the system’s subsequent processing and execution of the command.

“This in turn results in delayed execution of the command and unintended consequences in the game itself. There are currently no adequate solutions to the foregoing computer-related, technological problems.”

The patent also includes the AI tech being used to finish up incomplete controller inputs, which can happen due to a dropped Internet connection.

The new patent comes a week after PlayStation revealed a way for it to add smells to games like The Last Of Us. The room-sized prototype was revealed at tech showcase CES and added “engaging audio, haptics, scent and atmospherics” to fully immerse players into the world of the story.

Sony hasn’t announced how it will be using either of these cutting edge bits of technology in the future though.

In other news, the first teaser trailer for the big screen adaptation of Until Dawn has been released – and fans aren’t happy about the changes.
