On January 14, SM Entertainment announced that Joy has renewed her contract with the agency. She is the third Red Velvet member to do so in recent years. “Joy has completed her contract renewal based on the trust she has built with SM over many years, and will continue her activities with SM’s full support,” it said in a statement, per SpoTVNews.
“We are happy to be able to continue our beautiful journey with Joy, following Seulgi and Irene,” said SM Entertainment. “We will work hard to fully showcase her limitless abilities, not only as a member of Red Velvet, but also as the solo artist Joy and as actress Park Soo-young.”
Joy also commented on the contract renewal, saying that she wanted to “continue moving forward in a positive direction” based on the “trust and belief [she has] shared with SM Entertainment over the past ten years”.
Joy debuted in 2014 under SM Entertainment as a member of Red Velvet, and later launched her solo music career with the mini-album ‘Hello’ in 2021. Aside from music, Joy also has an acting career, having appeared in K-dramas such as Tempted, The One and Only and Once Upon a Small Town.
All five members of Red Velvet renewed their contracts with SM Entertainment back in 2021 for an unspecified term. Members Seulgi and Irene renewed their contracts once more in 2023 and 2024 respectively. The agency has not commented on the contract statuses of remaining members Wendy and Yeri.
Last November, Irene became the fourth member of Red Velvet to debut as a soloist with her mini-album ‘Like A Flower’. Meanwhile, their last group release was their June 2024 mini-album ‘Cosmic’, which commemorated their tenth anniversary.
