Speaking about the band’s reunion in a press release, Eliot reflected on the extreme emergency surgery that he had endured six years ago while on holiday in Spain. His full recovery was an epiphany. “What you might think is if you have a very close-to-death experience you want to start looking after yourself,” he said. “I just went chasing full speed after my youth. I was just like, fuck it, I might not be here next week, I’m just going to dive in.”
Formed in 1997, Rialto went on to release their self-titled debut album in 1998. A month prior to the release of their self-titled album, the band were dropped from their then label, East West, which ultimately ruined any chance of them receiving major commercial success. Their single ‘Untouchable’ landed within the top 20 in the UK Singles Chart. Rialto also made history as the first ever UK chart band to release a single exclusively through the internet in the summer of 1998.
They released their second and final album ‘Night on Earth’ in 2001 and disbanded shortly after. Though they didn’t receive much success in the UK, Rialto did find a dedicated fanbase in Southeast Asia where they became a chart-topping, double-platinum success.
As for Eliot, he released his solo debut EP ‘Everybody Loves You When You’re Dead’ in 2002, his debut solo LP ‘Long Way Round’ in 2004 and the album ‘Kittows Moor’ under the name Louis Eliot and The Embers. He has also toured extensively as a full-time member of Grace Jones’s band since 2011.
