The Britpop icon took to his X/Twitter page yesterday (January 8) to share a handful of tracks from the British punk pioneers and express what it felt like to discover their music.

Initially, he posted a YouTube link to the full version of the band’s iconic 1977 album, ‘Never Mind the Bollocks, Here’s the Sex Pistols’. This was soon followed by a separate update, in which he wrote: “Unless your guitars and your fucking attitude resemble these nuggets of days gone by then you can kiss my tubler bells”.

From there, Gallagher went on to share various other tracks from across the band’s discography. These included a ‘Revisited’ version of ‘God Save The Queen’, which was shared in 2022 to celebrate Platinum Jubilee, as well as ‘Bodies’ and their third single ‘Pretty Vacant’.

Finally, he shared a link to ‘The Great Rock ‘n’ Roll Swindle’ – the title song of The Great Rock ‘n’ Roll Swindle film soundtrack. The track was recorded live on the second day of an audition for singers and filmed for the movie, it would later spend six weeks on the UK Top 75 charts.

“I remember when I first laid eyes on this record I thought it was the fucking Ouija board. Then I heard it and all heaven broke loose,” Liam wrote in a separate update. “If you don’t own it go buy it NOW”.

The series of posts on X celebrating the punk veterans comes following the frontman hitting back at Glen Matlock after the Sex Pistols’ bassist called Oasis “boring” late last year.

Matlock  – who has also worked alongside Blondie and Iggy Pop, and has been hitting the road with Frank Carter as of late – made the comments during an NME interview, as he headed on tour to promote 2023 solo album ‘Consequences Coming’.

Discussing the massive response to news of an Oasis comeback tour, Matlock told NME: “I’ve always seen Oasis as a bit Status Quo. [With Quo], to hear one song once was enough. It’s a bit like that with Oasis: to hear one song once is enough. I just find them kind of samey.”

While he hailed Liam as “fantastic” in the interview, saying “he’s like Johnny Rotten but can carry a tune”, he added that he wouldn’t consider going to see the band live.

“[Liam’s] got a magnetic stage personality: he can just stand there and it’s riveting. The rest of the guys? No. I think they’re boring live. I’d never go to see ‘em.”

He also recalled how he nearly performed with them in the mid-’90s, but it fell through due to his energy on stage.” The reason they didn’t want me in the first place is because they wanted someone who’d stand still,” he said. “I went to see ‘em and I thought: the last thing they need is someone else standing still.”

Taking to X after the interview, Liam shared a response to Matlock’s comments, writing: “FUCK HIM SID WAS THE PISTOLS”.

The comments referred to late Sex Pistols bassist Sid Vicious, who joined after Matlock’s initial departure from the line-up in 1977 and went on to become one of the most famous faces in punk.

Sex Pistols reunited with Frank Carter stepping in for frontman duties last year, and are due to perform at Download Festival later this summer. They will also be appearing at Glasgow Summer Sessions on Saturday June 21 and Dreamland Margate on Saturday August 23. Visit here for tickets and more information.

As for Oasis, the band are set to make their highly-awaited return to the stage later this summer – kicking off with a string of huge stadium gigs in the UK and Ireland. From there, they will be taking the tour around the world, including dates in North America, South America, Australia, South Korea and Japan.

So far, little is known about which members will be joining Liam and Noel Gallagher for the massive gigs, although the frontman has been sharing hints about the setlists and the hopes for new material.
