Squid Game director and creator Hwang Dong-hyuk has said in an interview that the show’s latest season reflects the political turmoil South Korea is currently facing.

Korea JoongAng Daily reported today (January 8) that Hwang drew parallels between the voting scene in the newly released Squid Game season two and the political division over Yoon Suk-yeol’s impeachment in Korea, calling it an “eerie” resemblance.
“I heard on the news that the supporters and opponents of impeachment almost got into a fight, and in the end, the police had to draw a line between them with barricades,” he told press. “It gave me chills, as it was strikingly similar to Squid Game where people are divided by a line between O and X.”
In the second season of Squid Game, players are required to make a vote between O and X after every round to determine the continuance of the games. In season one, the vote only took place once after the first Red Light, Green Light game.

“I wanted to reflect that kind of phenomenon in the story, but seeing reality gradually becoming more similar to it felt both frightening and sad,” he added, calling the current movement to impeach Yoon a “critical moment”.
Hwang explained that his intention for Squid Game was to “ask whether the system of deciding everything through majority rule in a single vote is truly the right approach in a country like Korea, which operates under an imperial-style presidential system, and if there are any different alternatives.”
Earlier this week, Hwang shared in a separate interview some new details about the show’s third and final season, which he calls his “favourite”. He said, “You should be prepared for something intense. It will be the strongest message yet.”
Hwang also turned down the possibility of a fourth season, emphasising that Squid Game season three – now in the final stages of production and slated to premiere later this year – will be a definitive close “in every sense of the word”.
