According to Variety, Disney+ have ordered a pilot of a TV series based on the book of the same name by Louis Sachar, which was previously made into a film in 2003.

The potential new show would follow the same plot as the original story, but this time with a teenage girl at the forefront. No cast has been announced as of yet.

The synopsis for the new series reads: “In this reimagining of the beloved 1998 book from Louis Sachar, a teenage girl is sent to a detention camp where the ruthless Warden forces the campers to dig holes for a mysterious purpose.”

In the novel, a young boy with extremely bad luck called Stanley Yelnats is falsely accused of theft and sent to a juvenile discipline camp in the desert. He’s terrorised by the supervising Warden and forced to dig six-foot holes every day, before discovering a connection between the camp and his own family. It sold millions of copies worldwide, as well as winning multiple awards.

The 2003 film starred Shia LaBeouf as Stanley, alongside Sigourney Weaver as the Warden, Jon Voight, Tim Blake Nelson, Patricia Arquette, Henry Winkler and Eartha Kitt.

Drew Goddard, whose work includes Daredevil, The Martian, 10 Cloverfield Lane and The Good Place, is on board as executive producer, as is Yellowjackets and The Haunting Of Hill House’s Liz Phang, who will also serve as showrunner.

In an interview with Variety, Goddard said: “My mom, a lifelong school teacher, also serves as my book scout. She just tells me what her students are reading. And the very first thing she told me about was Holes, when it came out decades ago.”

Speaking of the crew behind the pilot, he continued: “They’ve done a wonderful job capturing Louis Sachar’s unique spirit. To say much more about what they have in store would spoil all the fun.”
