Wordle is a viral spelling game where players have to solve a daily puzzle involving a five-letter word. You get five tries to complete the challenge, with the game revealing each correct letter and placement from previous guesses. Solving the puzzle each day will add to your Wordle streak.
However in a new interview with Today, editorial director of Wordle owner New York Times Games Everdeen Mason revealed that last year, over 5million people had their streaks broken by one particularly challenging game.
On October 15, the Wordle answer was Corer which, according to the Oxford English Dictionary, is “an implement for removing the core of fruit”. Mason confirmed that 5.6million users had their Wordle streaks ruined by that particular puzzle.
The day Wordle picked “corer” and ruined 5.6 million streaks… well played, NY Times . Who knew fruit knives and core samples could break the internet in 2024?

She went on to reveal that 5.3billion Wordle games were played in 2024, with 2.8million people starting each puzzle with the same guess. The most popular opening move was “adieu”. According to Wordle’s own automated assistant, the best word to begin with is “slate” though “stare”, “audio” and “crane” are also very popular options among players.
Wordle was originally created by Josh Wardle before it was acquired by the New York Times in 2022 for a price “in the low seven figures.” The game is still free-to-play however last year, users were encouraged to break their streaks and avoid Wordle in solidarity with striking New York Times tech workers, who were protesting over issues including fair pay and remote working protections. A week later, the striking workers returned to work and promised to “move the fight inside”.
In November, popular multiplayer puzzle Words With Friends announced a number of new, single-player games including a Wordle-style challenge Guess Word.
In other news, after a lot of speculation and rumour around the Switch 2, one Nintendo fan has turned to tarot to find out when the new console will be announced. According to the cards, “the big wait for the reveal is over. It’s time to move on from Switch 2 speculation to Switch 2 enjoyment.”
