Sony has confirmed the hit third-person squad-shooter Helldivers 2 is being turned into a film.

Helldivers 2 launched in February 2024 and quickly became Sony’s biggest ever PC release, breaking a record set by 2018’s God Of War. It went on to become Sony Studios most popular release, shifting over 12million copies in three months. Now Sony has confirmed the game will be turned into a feature film.
Speaking on-stage at tech event CES last night (January 6), head of PlayStation Productions Asad Qizilbash said (via IGN): “Looking ahead as to what might come next, I’m excited to announce we are working with Sony Pictures on developing a film adaptation of our amazingly popular PlayStation game Helldivers 2.”
Set in the 22nd century after a fascist Super Earth emerged victorious from the First Galactic War, Helldivers 2 follows a group of soldiers trying to contain a breakout of genetically-engineered bugs known as Terminds from galactic farms while defending Super Earth from revenge-driven attacks by Automatons and the mysterious alien race known as The Illuminate.
No further details about the Helldivers 2 film have been released but the game was heavily inspired by 1997’s sci-fi action flick Starship Troopers, which was based on Robert A. Heinlein’s 1959 novel of the same name. Set in the 23rd century, the film follows rebellious teenager Johnny Rico (Casper Van Dien) as he joins the United Citizen Federation military and gets involved in the interstellar war against an alien species known as the Arachnids.
During CES, Sony also announced a live-action adaptation of Horizon Zero Dawn. “Just imagine, Aloy’s beloved origin story set in a vibrant, far future world filled with the giant machines, brought to you for the first time on the big screen,” said Qizilbash, with the project currently in the “early stages” of development. An anime adaptation of Ghost Of Tsushima is also in the works and will premiere in 2027.
In other news, an ominous new trailer for The Last Of Us confirms the second season of the hit HBO show will launch in April.
