Young Thug seems to call out “rat” Gunna on new song snippet

Young Thug has shared a snippet of an unreleased song featuring lyrics calling out a “rat,” which many believe is directed at Gunna.

Last week (January 2), the Atlanta rapper uploaded two teasers on his Instagram – the first was a preview of his verse on ‘Dum, Dumb and Dumber’ from Lil Baby’s latest album, ‘Wham’.

The second snippet sees Thug rhyme over a synth-trap instrumental: “Never associate with a rat / Go and get some money, get a pack” – which many believed to be a indirect shot at fellow Atlanta rapper, Gunna.

Both Thug and Gunna were arrested as part of the sweeping YSL R.I.C.O case back in 2021. The latter was released in 2022 after entering an Alford plea, causing the public to speculate whether he cooperated with the authorities – which can be seen as “snitching” or “ratting”.

Frequent collaborator and fellow Thug’s mentee Lil Baby also appeared to call Gunna a “rat” while telling a DJ to turn off their 2018 collaboration, ‘Drip Too Hard’ during a 2023 performance.

The rapper tried to silence the “rat” allegations on ‘Bread & Butter’ – his first single after being released from jail – rapping: “Never gave no statement or agreed to take no stand on ‘em.”

Thug – real name Jeffery Williams Jr. – was released from jail last October after accepting a plea deal, ending the longest-ever criminal trial in Georgia state history. In a since-deleted tweet, he was targeted at his former protégé: “Gunna, stop acting like we friends on the internet. I don’t know [you], my guy.”

The tweet further fuelled rumours that the two rappers have a supposed rift between them due to the R.I.C.O case. However, neither Gunna nor Thug have explicitly explained the reasons behind their apparent tension.

Thug has, however, continued to endorse Lil Baby. As well as featuring on ‘Dum, Dumb and Dumber’, the duo have teased that Thug will also be on the deluxe edition of the album. In a separate Instagram story post, the ‘Close Friends’ rapper wrote: “[Thug] chill, bra. The deluxe coming Tuesday. It’s on there” – alluding that the controversial snippet is a part of a song on an extended version of ‘WHAM’.

In other news, Young Thug affiliate Yak Gotti has been stabbed in jail. He is one of two remaining individuals awaiting a jury verdict in the ongoing YSL R.I.C.O case.

Meanwhile, Gunna performed in Nigeria for the first time ever at the Flytime Festival and brought out South African star Tyla to perform their 2024 collaboration, ‘Jump’.
